Canada’s April 12th Grocery and Essential Benefit
The federal government established the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit to help Canadians with low and moderate incomes pay for daily expenses and growing food.
One-time top-up: Qualifying individuals and families will receive a lump-sum payment equivalent to a 50% increase in their annual GST Credit in the spring of 2026 (by June at the latest). This can reach $402 for a single person, $527 for a couple, and $805 for a couple with two kids.
Payments will be made on a quarterly basis starting in July 2026 (in July, October, January, and April) and will rise by 25% over the course of five years. This will offer continuous support to help pay for everyday needs.
The benefit builds on the current GST Credit and is inflation indexed. It is expected to benefit over 12 million Canadians, including roughly 500,000 new recipients.
The Disability Benefit in Canada
The Canada Disability Benefit provides financial assistance to eligible adults with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 64. Benefits will be disbursed on a monthly basis, and only after June 2026 will recipients be eligible for up to 24 months of back pay.
